The Wardrobe, Decoded
The louder half of the best-dressed pair in film.
Mona May dressed Clueless and drew a clear line between the two friends: "She was more risqué, so we did shorter skirts. She had the leopard, the neon, the vinyl, and the '50s purses." The hats came from a specific source — "I met this designer named Kokin through a friend. He's a milliner from New York City, and I loved his hats, because I myself wear a lot of hats."
Why we can't let it go
Dionne Davenport is the half of Clueless that people forget and shouldn't. Cher gets the yellow plaid; Dionne gets everything else — leopard, vinyl, neon, and a hat in nearly every scene.
May's split is precise: Cher is preppy and coordinated, Dionne is louder, shorter and more textured. Two best friends dressed as two different arguments about how to be fifteen.
And the hats are the thing. A milliner May found through a friend, used relentlessly, on a teenage character in 1995. It's the boldest styling decision in a film full of them.

Bel-Air High, at full volume
Matched sets, short hems and a hat in nearly every scene.
01Matching Leopard SetTop and bottom in the same print. Half-matching reads as an accident.BudgetSplurge
Wear a hat. Genuinely — it's the single most Dionne thing available, and a structured bucket, boater or floppy hat changes an outfit more than any other accessory.
Match the set. Top and bottom in the same print or colour, cropped and short. Half-matching reads as an accident rather than a decision.
Leopard is a base, not an accent. So is neon. May used both at full volume and toning them down loses the character.
And add one shiny texture — vinyl, patent, satin. Nineties texture is what dates it correctly, more than the shapes do.
