The Wardrobe, Decoded

Sophie Canale designed the film and named her reference directly: "Felix was very much inspired by Prince William and Prince Harry who were of that age group in that time period" — drawing on "their nights out in Mayfair, polo matches." On the Midsummer Night's Dream party: "The only effort he's going to do is put on a pair of wings."

Why we can't let it go

Felix Catton is the most precisely observed rich-boy wardrobe ever put on film, and Canale's Prince William reference is exactly why. This is not fashion money. It's inherited money, worn badly on purpose.

Everything is good and nothing is cared for. Crumpled linen. A rugby shirt with the collar up. Black tie that doesn't quite fit because it belonged to someone else first.

And the wings line is the whole character. Everyone else at that party has built a costume. Felix turns up in a tuxedo and puts on wings, because effort is something other people do.

How to actually wear the Felix look

Everything should look owned rather than bought. Crumpled linen, a washed-out rugby shirt, a jumper with a hole in it. New and pressed is the wrong register entirely. The pieces are classic and slightly old-fashioned: rugby shirts, chino shorts, oxford shirts, a signet ring, plimsolls. Nothing technical, nothing branded. Fit is loose and slightly wrong. Sleeves pushed up, collar half-popped, shirt untucked on one side. And for black tie, don't get it tailored. A dinner jacket that's a little too big is far more Felix than one that fits.
