The Wardrobe, Decoded

The films made the uniform real.

Three designers covered the series: Judianna Makovsky on the first film, Lindy Hemming on the second, and Jany Temime on the final six. Temime's remit from Prisoner of Azkaban was a deliberate loosening — "We wanted to make it cooler. We needed to make the kids look like real 'next-door' kids." On the Yule Ball gown: "I dressed up Hermione in pink because that is a sweet sixteen colour, and I wanted that dress to look like a girl's dream."

Why we can't let it go

Hermione Granger is the most-worn costume on this list by a wide margin, and it's essentially school uniform — which is what makes it interesting.

The design story is a slow relaxation. The first two films are strict and formal, everything buttoned. Then Temime arrives and loosens it: untucked shirts, jumpers instead of blazers, jeans at weekends. The kids stop looking like a school photograph and start looking like teenagers.

And the Yule Ball dress is the exception that proves it. One night, one gown, one colour, chosen — in Temime's words — to look like a girl's dream. Everything else in seven films is grey.

How to actually wear the Hermione look

The uniform is four pieces: a grey pleated skirt, a white shirt, a house-striped tie and a V-neck jumper. Add the robe if you want it to be unmistakable; skip it and it's just very good school dressing. Grey, not black. The skirt and jumper are grey — black reads as a generic school costume rather than as this one. Temime's loosening is worth copying: untuck the shirt, loosen the tie, let the jumper be slightly too big. The later films look better than the early ones for exactly this reason. And for the Yule Ball version, it's a soft pink floaty gown with a ruffled neckline and hair up. That's the whole thing.
