The Wardrobe, Decoded
Layered, cheap, and permanently 1985.
Deborah Lynn Scott designed the film, and settled one of cinema's longest-running arguments directly: per NPR, Scott confirmed the vest is orange, and — as the film's own dialogue jokes — it reads as a life preserver. That single garment carries the whole outfit; everything under it is ordinary mid-eighties teenage clothing.
Why we can't let it go
Marty McFly is the most quietly copied men's outfit in film, because almost every piece of it is something people already own. Jeans, a checked shirt, a denim jacket, trainers.
The gilet is what turns it into a costume. It's the one deliberate item — bright, puffy, unmistakably 1985 — and everything else exists to hold it up.
What's genuinely interesting is that it hasn't dated. Layered denim with a puffer gilet is a perfectly normal outfit now, forty years on, which is more than can be said for most of what was on screen in 1985.

The layering order matters: checked shirt, denim jacket, gilet on top. All three visible. Skip the middle layer and it stops reading.
The gilet is orange — Scott confirmed it — and it should be down-filled and shiny rather than matte. That's the one piece worth getting exactly right.
Jeans should be straight-leg and mid-wash, with a bit of length. Skinny or black jeans move it out of the decade.
And the trainers are white leather high-tops with a visible swoosh or stripe. Nothing technical, nothing modern-looking.
