Broke, and dressed better than everyone.
Michael Kaplan designed the film, and the red leather jacket was made in "the exact shade of dried blood." His logic for the character: "I knew he had no money. So I made him this mad-cap character who dressed out of thrift shops, but with a very discerning eye." David Fincher's brief was that there was "no such thing as too far" — until Kaplan put Brad Pitt in a tube top and Fincher said, "Uh Michael… I know what I said, but you've crossed the line."
Why we can't let it go
Tyler Durden is the best-dressed broke person in film, and the design logic behind it is genuinely good: no money, but taste. Thrift shops, worked through by someone with an eye.
Which means everything is slightly wrong in an interesting way. A red leather jacket that doesn't match anything. A fur-collared coat over a printed shirt. Sunglasses at night. Nothing coordinates and everything is deliberate.
And Kaplan's dried-blood detail is the kind of thing that separates good costume design from shopping. Nobody consciously registers the shade. Everybody registers the effect.

The red leather jacket is the piece. Get a deep, brownish red rather than a bright one — Kaplan's dried-blood shade is what stops it looking like a costume.
Underneath, go seventies thrift: printed shirts, wide collars, texture. Nothing modern, nothing plain, nothing that matches the jacket.
The fur-collared coat is the second signature and it's genuinely wearable — faux fur collar on a dark overcoat, worn open.
And wear sunglasses indoors. It's absurd, it's part of the character, and it costs nothing.
