The Wardrobe, Decoded
The whole character is in one costume decision.
Heidi Bivens made Cassie's second-season shift deliberate and legible: "I knew that we needed to really drive it home. It was gonna be a scene at school where Maddy would be there, and I just thought, 'OK, well, it would be great if we really made it obvious that she's trying to dress like Maddy.'" Bivens on the underlying logic: "Cassie's always yearning for this love from others… She is looking to others for approval, looking to others for inspiration for her style."
Why we can't let it go
Cassie Howard has the saddest costume design on this site, and it's also the cleverest. She doesn't have a style. She has whoever she's currently trying to be.
Season one is soft — pastels, florals, cardigans, a genuinely pretty and slightly retro wardrobe. Then Bivens deliberately overwrites it with a copy of Maddy's, and the show never has to say a word about what's happening.
It's a rare case of costume design doing character work that dialogue would ruin. And the first-season wardrobe is, taken on its own, one of the prettiest on the show.

Season One
Soft, pretty, and entirely herself

The season-one version is the more wearable one: pastel knits, small floral prints, soft cardigans, ribbons, a slightly retro silhouette. Everything soft-focus and nothing structural.
Keep the palette pale — butter yellow, powder blue, blush, cream. It's the opposite of the show's usual saturation, which is why it reads as her.
Hair accessories do a lot: a ribbon, a clip, a soft headband. Cheap, and very specific to the character.
And if you want the season-two version, it's simply the Maddy formula — cut-outs, tight fits, dark neutrals — which is the joke. Wearing them side by side is the whole story.
