The Wardrobe, Decoded

Crafty, chaotic, and entirely deliberate.

Erin Benach designed Birds of Prey around one governing rule: "We always wanted to create something that felt like Harley made it herself, so she's sort of a crafty person." The caution-tape jacket came from exactly that instinct — "we kind of took the idea of that caution tape and tried to repurpose it into a costume." Kate Hawley's earlier Suicide Squad version was a different design entirely.

Why we can't let it go

Harley Quinn is the most fun costume on this site to actually assemble, because the design brief is that it should look assembled. Benach's rule — that Harley made it herself — means nothing has to match and nothing has to be expensive.

The Birds of Prey wardrobe is a genuine upgrade on the earlier version: louder, more colourful, and far more like something a person would put together in a hurry out of whatever was around.

And it's a very good Halloween option for the same reason. There is no single canonical outfit to get wrong. Pigtails, two colours, fishnets, and something homemade over the top.

How to actually wear the Harley look

Nothing matches, and that's correct. Two clashing colours, one printed piece, one DIY element. The whole design brief was that she made it herself. The silhouette is short and layered: high-waisted shorts or a mini, fishnets or coloured tights, chunky boots, and something oversized on top — a bomber, a caution-tape jacket, a shrunken denim. Hair does a lot of the work. Pigtails with two different colours at the ends is the single most recognisable element, and it costs almost nothing. And add hardware without a theme: chains, a studded belt, mismatched bracelets. The rule is that there isn't one.
