The Wardrobe, Decoded

Tailoring designed to move, not to protect.

Jany Temime designed Skyfall and Spectre, and took a specific brief to Tom Ford: "A suit that is a continuation of your body, a suit that is like a second skin. Not something that is protective but something which moves with his body." She took the shape to Ford directly — "he said he understands because he's a filmmaker himself." No Time to Die was designed by Suttirat Anne Larlarb.

Why we can't let it go

Bond in Skyfall is the sharpest tailoring in modern film and the most argued-about, because Temime cut it close enough that people still debate whether it fits.

Her reasoning answers the argument. She didn't want a protective suit — she wanted one that moves like skin, because the man in it fights. That's the opposite instinct to John Wick's tailoring and it produces the opposite silhouette.

Everything else follows the same logic: a knitted tie instead of silk, a pea coat instead of an overcoat, a shawl-collar cardigan for the Scotland sequences. It's a wardrobe with no ornament in it at all.

How to actually wear the Bond look

Close, but only if it fits properly. Temime's cut is slim through the chest and short in the jacket — on the wrong body it looks tight rather than sharp, and there's no forgiving detail anywhere. The knitted tie is the single most liftable piece. Square-ended, wool or silk knit, in navy or charcoal. It does more than a silk tie and costs less. Stay in navy, charcoal and midnight blue. Bond almost never wears black, and never brown. And the off-duty half is genuinely useful: a navy pea coat, a shawl-collar cardigan, a plain jumper and dark denim. That's a full winter wardrobe with nothing wasted.
