Go workwear, not costume. Canvas, waxed cotton, leather and wool in brown, olive and rust. Anything synthetic or shiny kills it immediately. The jacket should fit — Makovsky's whole point. A well-cut brown leather or waxed jacket that lets you move your arms freely is the correct piece. Layer a canvas or flannel shirt under it, with a plain long-sleeve underneath. Three layers, all utilitarian. And the braid does as much as any garment. Single side braid, slightly loose. For a costume, that plus the jacket is genuinely enough.
