The Wardrobe, Decoded
A costume that carries the whole arc.
Kym Barrett designed the film, and is explicit about what the coat is doing: "The coat gives the audience a visual feeling that Neo has gone from being the confused acolyte into taking on his power." She described the design process as "trying to subconsciously braid a bunch of ancient stories about The One" — which is why the silhouette reads as robe and cassock as much as it does as coat.
Why we can't let it go
Neo is one garment. Everything else in the outfit is support.
Barrett's coat is doing religious work — it's cut like a cassock, it moves like a robe, and it turns a man walking into a man arriving. The fact that it's also just a long black coat is why it's been copied continuously for twenty-five years.
The rest is austere on purpose: no colour, no visible fastenings, no logos, high collars, everything closed. It's the most disciplined silhouette on this site after Morticia.

Length is everything. The coat needs to reach mid-calf at minimum — a knee-length black coat is a completely different, much more ordinary garment.
No lapels, or as few as possible. A high funnel or mandarin collar is what separates this from a normal overcoat.
Everything underneath is black and closed: a high-collared shirt or fine knit, straight black trousers, plain black boots. No contrast anywhere, no visible hardware.
And the glasses are small, oval and dark — worn indoors, at night. Modern oversized sunglasses are the wrong decade and undo it instantly.
